The Journey Begins

Lara Derham, the writer and stage director for “Hellblade II,” shared her insights on Senua’s evolution from the first game to the sequel. Senua, a Pictish warrior from Orkney, experiences the world uniquely due to her mental health struggles. Her journey in the first game, driven by trauma and a quest to save her lover’s soul from hell, transforms her deeply. “By the time we come to the beginning of the second game, she’s found a kind of peace with her experiences,” Derham explained. This new chapter sees Senua vowing to end the Viking slave trade, leading her to Iceland.

Immersion in Real-World Locations

Dan Attwell, the Environment Art Director, highlighted the shift in the sequel towards using real-world locations. Iceland’s rugged and dramatic landscapes were chosen to enhance the game’s immersion. “Basing on real locations and capturing those real locations kind of offers us the opportunity to increase immersion,” Attwell noted. Using satellite data, drone-based photogrammetry, and direct scans, the team recreated these landscapes in stunning detail.

One key location, Djúpalón, had already been showcased in a gameplay trailer featuring Senua’s encounter with a sea giant. Derham described how the stark, imposing landscape inspired this significant moment. “The sea is such a presence. It seemed really fitting to create an encounter like in that location,” she said.

Capturing the Essence of Iceland

Attwell elaborated on the challenges and creative liberties taken in translating real-world locations into the game. From the volcanic terrains of Reykjanestá to the sulfuric springs of Krysuvik, each setting was meticulously crafted to maintain its authenticity while serving the game’s narrative and gameplay needs.

For instance, at Krysuvik, the team drew from Icelandic folklore, incorporating the tale of the witch Kyrsa into the game’s lore. This connection between the landscape and myth added depth to the game’s world. Derham explained, “We’ve tried with every location to ground what we’re doing with it in some kind of connection back to the folklore and back to the land.”

Bringing Senua’s World to Life

The discussion also touched on the technical and artistic efforts to bring Senua’s struggles and triumphs to life. From motion capture sequences that mirrored Iceland’s challenging terrains to the vivid recreation of volcanic rocks at Rauðhólar, the attention to detail was paramount.

Derham hopes that both new players and returning fans will find themselves deeply invested in Senua’s journey. “I want them to feel that we’ve continued her journey in a way that makes them feel as immersed and as invested in Senua as they did from the first game,” she said.

A Seamless Blend of Reality and Myth

Ultimately, the team at Ninja Theory aims to provide a journey that feels both intimate and expansive. By faithfully recreating Iceland’s landscapes and weaving them into Senua’s personal narrative, they have crafted a world that is as compelling as it is beautiful.

“Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II” is set to release on May 21st for Xbox and PC, available from Day One on Xbox Game Pass.
