Bungie is looking at possible changes to Marathon’s endgame map, Cryo Archive, after a weekend of player feedback about its difficulty, grind, and limited availability.

Cryo Archive is designed as a demanding endgame activity. Players need to prepare gear, learn mechanics in advance, and work closely with a coordinated team. Even then, failure is common. Bungie appears aware of that challenge, but it is also considering ways to let more players experience the activity.

Game director Joe Ziegler said the team has been collecting feedback and reviewing several problem areas. The main topics under discussion are giving players the option to run Cryo Archive solo, reducing frustration with Subroutine randomness in vaults, and improving scheduling options for more casual players.

Right now, Cryo Archive is only open on weekends starting Friday at 1:00 p.m. ET. That creates a narrow time window for players who need to fit runs around work and other responsibilities. Access is also restricted by a 5K gear requirement. On top of that, finishing the map requires repeated successful runs to collect specific gear from specific vaults in order to unlock the final boss fight, while also surviving against other players.

That structure makes Cryo Archive more layered and complicated than a typical Destiny 2 raid. Instead of moving through a straight sequence of puzzles and combat encounters, players deal with repeated runs, interrupted progress, and setbacks that can force them to start over or repeat parts of the process.

The central issue is whether a highly dedicated group can keep working at Cryo Archive over multiple weekends and eventually succeed, or whether the time investment will still be too high for many players.

Bungie has not announced any final changes yet, and Ziegler indicated the team needs time to determine the best approach.
