Roblox Corporation has rolled out mandatory age verification for chat access in India, making it the first major global gaming platform to require age checks for users of all ages before enabling in-game communication. The move marks a significant step in strengthening online safety, particularly for minors, while ensuring age-appropriate interactions across the platform.
Under the new system, users must complete an age check to access chat features. Without verification, chat remains disabled. The initiative is part of Roblox’s broader global push to curb unsafe interactions and limit conversations between adults and children.

Global Rollout Gains Momentum
Roblox first introduced mandatory age checks in December 2025 across Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands, following a phased rollout announcement in November. According to the company, over 50% of daily active users in these regions have already completed the process.
Globally, tens of millions of users have verified their age so far, with Roblox expecting rapid adoption as the feature expands. The rollout currently covers the United States, Australia, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Brazil, South Korea, Japan, Indonesia, and now India.

How the Age Check Works
Roblox’s age verification is designed to be fast, private, and secure, completed within seconds through the Roblox mobile app using a device’s camera. The platform uses facial age estimation technology, with data securely processed by its verification partner Persona and deleted immediately after processing.
Users aged 13 and above also have the option to verify their age using official ID documents. While age checks are technically optional, chat access and certain features remain locked until verification is complete.
For users facing inaccuracies, Roblox offers appeal mechanisms, including alternate verification methods, ID checks, and parental controls that allow guardians to update a child’s age.
Roblox has emphasized that age checks are not a one-time safeguard. The platform continuously evaluates user behavior using multiple signals to detect discrepancies between verified age and in-game behavior. If inconsistencies arise, users may be asked to repeat the age verification process.

Age Groups and Chat Access
Once users complete an age check, they are assigned to one of six age groups: under 9, 9–12, 13–15, 16–17, 18–20, and 21+. By default, users in each age group can chat with users in the groups directly above and below theirs (i.e., users 9-12 can chat with users in their own group, as well as those in the under-9 and 13-15 groups).
To safeguard Roblox’s youngest users, chat is turned off by default for children under age 9, unless a parent provides consent after an age check.
Tools for Parents and Caregivers
Roblox is also expanding its parental control ecosystem, allowing parents to monitor age-check status, update birthdates, and manage communication settings. Parents can access detailed guides and resources through Roblox’s Safety Center, designed to help families make informed decisions about their child’s online gaming experience.
